The 'making' of a serial killer is a very complex process that is not fully understood at this time. It is thought though that it is a combination of genetics and environment, or the 'nature and nurture' theory.
Rarely, a person may have a certain genetic predisposition and when combined with the exact right environment, especially at a young age, the result could be what we know as a serial killer.
The best examples of this would be killers Jeffrey Dahmer and Aileen Wuornos. Dahmer's father confessed to having violent fantasies as a young man. These types of fantasies are what drive these killers to kill over and over. This trait in his father almost certainly predisposed Jeffrey to the same thing. Then when mixed with environmental factors, the result was a serial killer.
Wuornos had strong genetic ties to violence. Although they had never met, her biological father was also a killer and a pedophile. She was raised by her maternal grandparents after being abandoned by her teenaged mother, and was subject to untold abuse at the grandfather's hands. So the combination of her strong predisposition to violence and the abusive grandfather, once again, the result was a killer.
The FBI's Behavioral Science Unit has been studing serial killers for over three decades and have made great strides in the understanding of this rare type of killer, but there is still much they don't understand. Until a time when the reasons are fully understood, they have little chance of preventing serial murder.
He was known as The Whitechapel Killer until a letter arrived in which he signed his name as Jack The Ripper. If nothing else, he seemed to have a flair for the dramatic. The name was more appropriate then anyone could have guessed at the time. The combination of an unsolved mystery, his gruesom crimes and that unique name has made this killer the most well-known serial killer in history.
jack the ripper made his crimes in whitechapel London
because he was never caught and nobody knew who he was, and he was really brutal //'Best' is not exactly the right word for Jack The Ripper. 'Infamous' better describes the work of the unknown serial killer of Victorian-era London. The Ripper is probably the most recognized serial killer of all time for several reasons. His crimes were some of the most brutal in criminal history, not content to cut his victim's throats, but to disembowel and mutilate them, some almost beyond recognition. The fact that the killer was never caught lends the air of mystery to the killer and his crimes. Had he been discovered he may have been forgotten except to professionals who study murder. It would have put an end to the conspiracy theories and some of the more outlandish myths that have surfaced through the years. And lastly, JTR was the first serial killer to have his crimes played out in the press. The publicity surrounding his crimes was enormous, not just locally but world wide. Especially Americans, who could barely wait the two weeks it took for British newspapers to arrive by ship. These are the reasons that have made Jack The Ripper a household name, and without a doubt, synonymous with evil.
In the year 1888 the term 'serial killer' was over a century in the future. Very little was known about this kind of murder. So it's not totally surprising that the Ripper was never caught. We know much more about serial murder in the wake of Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer. Jack The Ripper's crimes were sexual in nature reguardless that there was no sign of actual rape. This killer had an overwhelming desire to control his victims. When this man attacked he was in a frenzy, evident in the 'overkill' of the victims bodies. But the bottom line was power. Power and control are the driving force for most serial killers. And they were for the Ripper also.
Although many have come after him, the most recognized name in serial murder by far is the 19th century London killer, Jack The Ripper. His crimes are still some of the most brutal on record and the interest in this killer never wanes. Mostly due to the fact that the killer was never caught which has made way for outragious theories and second and third guessing. The crimes of JTR were not the result of Freemasons, a Royal conspiracy, a woman, nor was the Ripper neccessarily a medical doctor, butcher or furrier. Many times, serial killers don't come with a 'neon sign' that alerts the world to what they really are. They are master mimics, with the ability to blend in to the world around them. The real Ripper was probably never susupected in his lifetime.
Literally hundreds of books have been written about JTR. Probably the best known serial killer, he is more popular as a subject now than he was at the time of his crimes. Countless movies have been made, not all of the dealing with the truth.
Marie Kelly, often known for her association with the infamous Jack the Ripper case, was born as Mary Jane Kelly. She was born in Ireland in 1863 and later moved to London, where she became a victim of the serial killer in 1888. Her tragic death has made her one of the most notable figures in the history of the Ripper murders.
There are lots of theories, but the identity of Jack the Ripper remains unknown. his name was Robert.masterson in Gordon kormen's book titanic his legs failed and he went to NYC to have them fixed but a young stwerd named alfe made him drown and later alfe died of hypothermia. //Jack The Ripper was not on the Titanic, he continued to kill east end prostitutes until at least 1891 and probably beyond that. Had Gordon Kormen done his research he would have known that.//
Scotland Yard detectives. It was easy once they received several letters signed Jack The Ripper. That made him the number one suspect.
It was the term given to him based on a letter received by the London Metropolitan Police which was signed with the moniker Jack the Ripper. Prior to this letter--unlikely to have actually been written by the killer--he was known only as the Whitechapel Murderer.
The case was never solved. Everybody loves a mystery so the crimes have achieved an almost mythical quality. Had the murders been solved in the 1880's the Ripper's crimes would barely be remembered. There are actually people that earn their living from these murders. There are several Jack The Ripper walks not to mention the countless books written and many movies made about this fiend. If the killer was revealed their livelyhoods would be compromised. So it seems to work better when he Ripper remains unknown.
