actually its because they hoped to get the loyalists in the back-country in the SOUTH to join their army when they marched past them

While these two strategies are not the only two, the above strategies tended to work more often then not, that is until General Pickett and his charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. The preference for offensive battle tactics early in the war was another strategy.
