Technically Maleficent curses her to die at 16 but the 3 good fairies make it so it is sleeping not death since Maleficent is more powerful than them they can only lighten the curse not totally remove it I don't know if this is true but I heard somewhere that Maleficent used to be the 4th good fairy but then jealousy or something made her evil. While I can't say for certain what was behind the choice ... the meaning is pretty obvious to anyone who knows Latin. "Bene-" is the Latin root for "good" and "Mal-" is the Latin root for "evil", so "maleficent" is like "beneficent" except ... y'know ... evil instead of good.
Maleficent is a character from the fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty." She is the evil fairy who curses Princess Aurora to prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into a deep sleep.
Malefica è una strega malvagia is an English equivalent of the Italian phrase "Maleficent is an evil witch." The feminine singular declarative statement in the third person singular of the present indicative translates literally by word order as "Maleficent is a witch evil" since adjectives generally follow their nouns in Italian. The pronunciation will be "ma-LEH-fee-ka eh OO-na STREY-ga mal-VA-dja" in Italian.
