There were several reasons. Among them, were just the sheer numbers of invaders. The Indians had primitive weapons compared to the Europeans. The First Peoples generally welcomed this new kind of being to their midsts. The naivete that all peoples who gave their word would keep it. Most prominently, however, was their belief that the earth mother could not be owned, so when the settlements began, the Indians were convinced that those few whites would just share and honor the Mother as they did.

The people's culture was very different from the European's culture. They shared; Europeans acquired. The people had no concept of ownership, but rather caretaking.

The healers had no familiarity with the diseases such as small pox, flu and so forth. The Europeans deliberately traded with blankets infected with such diseases so as to wipe out the population.

Many behaviors by Europeans were so strange, such as rape and striking children, that they did not know how to handle such situations. Of course, the people's ways were equally strange to the Europeans.
