In the 1950's, the then President decreed that only Sinhalese and English could be spoken in the governmental institutions(schools, hospitals etc..)This dispossessed the Tamil population and could be said to be the root cause of the problems today.

What was the basics of the civil war in sri lanka?

According Jonathan Spencer, a social anthropologist from the School of Social and Political Studies of the University of Edinburgh[1], the Sri Lankan Civil War is an outcome of how modern ethnic identities have been made and re-made since the colonial period, with the political struggle between minority Sri Lankan Tamils and the Sinhala-dominant government accompanied by rhetorical wars over archeological sites and place name etymologies, and the political use of the national past.[2][3]According Jonathan Spencer, a social anthropologist from the School of Social and Political Studies of the University of Edinburgh[1], the Sri Lankan Civil War is an outcome of how modern ethnic identities have been made and re-made since the colonial period, with the political struggle between minority Sri Lankan Tamils and the Sinhala-dominant government accompanied by rhetorical wars over archeological sites and place name etymologies, and the political use of the national past.[2][3]

In recent years Sri Lanka has experienced conflict between Tamil Hindus and Sinhalese. Muslims Christians Buddhists or Jains?

There is no religious fight in Sri Lanka. We have Majority Buddhist and Minority Hindu, Muslims, and Burgers. There is NO religious conflict between the people of Sri Lanka but we have problem with majority Sinhalese and Minority Tamils.Where as before the independent of Sri Lanka from the British in 1948, the South and the west was ruled by Sinhala kingdom and North and east was ruled by Tamil Kingdom. As for the easy purpose of ruling the country, the British made the county in to one. When they left the country they left the county as one and let the Sinhalese and Tamils to sort out there problem.Due to Sinhalese are majority and the government which made of Sinhala majority ministers who wants to please the Majority, Sinhala Government start to impose some new policies that against the Minority. Such as Standardization, Sinhala Only Language and so on. This made the fundamental disadvantage for the Minority Tamils and they raised against the government.Since than following was happened....1948 - Months after gaining independence, the Government of Sri Lanka disenfranchises 33% of Tamils, removing their right to vote...62 years on, the discriminationcontinues...1958 - Hundreds of Tamils are murdered in the first of many vicious racial attacks...52 years on, the violence continues...1983 - Over 3000 Tamils are murdered and 150,000 made homeless in Sri Lankan State sponsored anti-Tamil riots...27 years on, the genocide continues...2009 - Over 40,000 Tamils killed, over 300,000 Tamils imprisoned in detention camps...as the world watches on, the eradication of a people continues...Today - IDPs left to fend for themselves, crimes against humanity with impunity, state sponsored colonization of Tamil areas, media censorship, lack of access to international monitors, no justice for the lives lost and no voice for those who have survived...the injustice continues...

What is sri lankas nation?

India- Sri Lanka has been the scene of bitter civil warfare between the Sinhalese and the Tamils, the latter of whom want a separate Tamil state within the country and who had a terrorist guerrilla army called the Tamil Tigers. India supported the Sri Lankan Government, made up mostly of Sinhalese, in it's fight against the Tamils. The Tamil Tigers carried out a series of bombings and mass shootings throughout the 1980s and '90s, both within Sri Lanka itself and on the Indian mainland- targets included airports, railway stations, airliner bombings, and shopping centres. Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi sent the Indian Army into Sri Lanka in 1987 to assist the Tamil Government in crushing the Tigers- as a result, he was himself killed by a female Tamil suicide bomber in 1991 during his re-election campaign. The Tamil Tigers were finally crushed by a massive joint operation between the Sri Lankan Government and it's Indian ally in May 2009.
