In the 1950's, the then President decreed that only Sinhalese and English could be spoken in the governmental institutions(schools, hospitals etc..)This dispossessed the Tamil population and could be said to be the root cause of the problems today.

There is no religious fight in Sri Lanka. We have Majority Buddhist and Minority Hindu, Muslims, and Burgers. There is NO religious conflict between the people of Sri Lanka but we have problem with majority Sinhalese and Minority Tamils.Where as before the independent of Sri Lanka from the British in 1948, the South and the west was ruled by Sinhala kingdom and North and east was ruled by Tamil Kingdom. As for the easy purpose of ruling the country, the British made the county in to one. Such as Standardization, Sinhala Only Language and so on.
