What made the patterns on mars?

Although the astronomer Percivel Lowell thought that the planet Mars had a pattern of canals, which would logically have been built by Martians, closer examination of Mars in more recent years has shown a lack of such canals or patterns. Lowell simply imagnied patterns, because he did not have a powerful enough telescope to see Mars as it really is.
