It isn't. French is the native tongue for many people in Quebec and New Brunswick as well as small pockets in Alberta, but the majority of Canadians speak English.
They didn't support Canadians, but the French. The reason they supported the French was that the French had been treating them with respect and lived with them since they entered "New France." The English had always treated the Native Americans with disrespect and killed them when they could.
