The Northwest Ordinance
During the initial westward expansion (into the early 19th century), from the eastern seaboard over the eastern mountains into Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Ohio Country, people walked and some used wagons drawn by horses, mules or oxen. Then, during the first half of the 19th century, as canals were built and the expansion westward reached land where the rivers also flowed westward, waterborne transportation became important, still supplemented by wagons and walking. This was the era of the canalboat, flatboat and keelboat, as well as of the steamboat. In the second half of the 19th century and for expansion west of the Mississippi, walking, wagons, and water (to a lesser extent) were the primary means of transportation until the railroads began to be built out. During the later 19th century, rail became the primary mode of transportation over longer distances. During the first half of the 20th century, automobiles (and trucks) began to supplement rail and eventually took over as the primary mode of transportation. In the second half of the 20th century, airplanes became an important element in transportation of both people and goods.

What makes the Alamo so special? well The Alamo, a stone monument to Anglo westward expansion, was originally built as a Catholic mission for the purpose of converting Mesoamerican Indians living near the growing town of San Antonio. The name "Alamo" came from Spanish cavalry members, who nicknamed the mission after their own village of Alamo de Parras. Alamo means "cottonwood" in Spanish [source: Winders]. AnswerThe major positive aspect of railroad expansion was a quicker, more efficient means of transportation of people and goods. The railroads could run almost anywhere, were faster than other means of transportation, and could run at anytime of the year. The first railroads connected eastern communities with major trading centers. The transcontinental railroads connected the nation from coast to coast. The railroad marked the end of the isolation of the West. The trains not only provided transportation to the settlements, but made the rancher and farmer more accessible to the eastern markets. The railroads provided the boost necessary for the expansion of the cattle kingdom.
Westward expansion was a time when people in the Eastern US started moving West for various reasons. They moved West to find cheaper land, business opportunities, freedom for slaves, and more. People believed in Manifest Destiny which simply means expansion was a given right and was good for our country.
Expansion means that the volume increases.
Some positive effects of the westward expansion is that the Pony Express Continental came about. Westward Expansion also allowed more jobs to be invented from the Gold Rush. Plus, the size of the United States doubled, meaning there are more resources available. The negative effects are the Native Americans being forced in to reservations after having their land stolen, being forced to assimilate into the white culture, having their main source of life, the buffalo to be killed off, and war which caused the deaths of many Native Americans.
