The soldiers weren't trained well and they weren't organized well until later. They also didn't realize how serious the war would be until they started getting killed in brutal battles.

Both Battles of Manassas(Bull Run) , July 21, 1861 and August 29-30,1862 were Confederate victories,but I don't think either had a distinct effect on the outcome of the War.
The Civil War ended on April 9, 1865, when Robert E. Lee surrendered the last major Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse. This happened on a Sunday.
His whole emphasis was to not allow the southern states to leave the union. He felt if he did that the union would never come together again.
It's yet to be determined.
Because the war was going badly, the south was winning most of the major battles, and he felt the time had come for desperate measures.
