The major factors that led to the Korean War were internal and external in nature. Internally, differences between competing Korean political parties were eventually considered to be beyond peaceful resolution and finally sparked the conflict. Externally, powerful nations (principally China and the United States) sought to influence the outcome, with each backing a different side. This led to an aggravation of the internal conflict and the involvement of foreign troops on Korean soil.

My reading leads me to believe Stalin wished keep China separated from the U.S. He could do this by leading Kim Il-Sung into believing he would back the North in the event the U.S. entered the conflict. At the same time Mao repeatedly requested naval forces for an amphibious assault on Formosa. Stalin could keep China occupied in Korea and not have to supply the necessary amphibious craft. This would compel China to move closer to the Soviet Union and into Stalin's camp.

The major event that led up to the Korean War was World War 2. As a result of Japan's surrender, the Korean peninsula was occupied by Russia and the United States, as agreed upon by both countries, to assist in reconstruction efforts. When the northern and southern halves were unable to agree on a single government, they each created their own, now known as North Korea and South Korea. The North invaded the South and almost defeated them, but the United Nations authorized an intervention force, mostly made up of US personnel, and fought them back, eventually leading to a stalemate.

The major event that led up to the Korean War was when Kim Il Sung visited Russia, formally the Soviet Union, in 1949. While there he was convinced by Stalin that he could easily defeat South Korea.
