There were major asteroid impacts.
Cenozoic is not a major period of the geologic time scale. The scale is broken down into eras. Cenozoic, Mesozoic and Paleozoic are all part of the Phanerozic era.
The divisions of the geologic time scale are divided into four eras. from earliest to closer to the present is the Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Cenozoic. During these time periods, there were several major evolutionary events. Most commonly known are the dinosaurs and humans. Hope that helped :)
The Permian-Triassic extinction event. Also known as the P-Tr extinction or the Great Dying, where 96% of all life died out.
Earth's history is divided into apparent major climate changes, usually delineated by mass extinctions. The previous three periods are the paleozoic, mesozoic, and Cenozoic. The paleozoic is further divided into the Cambrian, vendian, orodovician, silurian, devonian, mississipian, pennsylvanian, and permian. I remember the order with the mnemonic: Campbell's Very Ordinary Soups Do Make People Puke. The mesozoic is divided into the triassic, Jurassic, and cretaceous. The cretaceous ended 65 million years ago. The most recent division (ours) of the Cenozoic is the holocene. Before that, the pleistocene. Othere cenes are miocene, pliocene, oligocene, and paleocene. These are in no particular order--I need to find a good mnemonic for them.
