Pearl Harbor served as the primary base for the United States Navy's Pacific Fleet. Just after dawn on Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese Navy attacked the base from the air by surprise, destroying most of the Navy's Pacific Fleet. All of the US Navy's battleships were put out of commission, as well as a number of cruisers and destroyers. Following the attack, the US declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941, thus officially entering WWII.
