On June 3, 1861, the most influential leader of the Democratic Party, Stephen A. Douglas died suddenly from typhoid fever. It is speculated that had he lived, he would have been a viable Democratic candidate for the 1864 US presidential election. Many books on the US Civil War fail to mention the importance of Douglas' death.
