The liver performs over 500 different functions, most of them are associated with its main function as a filter. The kidneys perform fewer functions, but they are just as vital as the liver. If either of these organs stop functioning, death would soon follow.
In addition to filtration of impurities and metabolic toxins from the blood, the liver also plays a role in digestion and metabolism. In digestion, the liver produces bile which is stored in the gall bladder and then delivered into the first portion of the small intestine called the duodenum. The main job of bile is to breakdown fat by a process known as emulsification. In metabolism, the liver stores sugar in the form of glycogen. When the body needs energy, the pancreas releases glucagon, which is a hormone that tells the liver to turn the stored glycogen into glucose (sugar) and release it into the blood stream for the body to use.
