Yes, Nissan used the same transmission for all of the rear drive ka24s, single cam and dual cam. Even the trucks have the same transmission.
Check the transmission fluid first to make sure that its full. If the transmission is high mileage then it might need a filter and fluid change. If the Filter is ok then the transmission might need a rebuild.
A seized gear can cause a knocking sound on a 1987 Nissan 5 speed transmission. A blown gasket can also cause this sound.

You will know you are a jerk if people call you that a lot...and also if, deep inside, you know you are. Jerks: Are mean Jerks: Don't care about anyone but themselves Jerks: Dump people after they got what they want Jerks: Don't care about others feelings... Jerks: Hit people Jerks: Steal Jerks: Are jerks :) If people are constantly canceling things they're supposed to do with you, or your best friends stop wanting to hang out with you.

This is pulled from the PDF manual. Use ONLY Genuine Nissan Matic D ATF (Continental U.S. and Alaska) or Canada NISSAN Automatic Transmission Fluid. For a Nissan Sentra with a manual transmission, the transmission has two plugs . One is a filler plug, which is on its side near the front driver-side tire and clutch cable, and the other is a drain plug, which is at the bottom of the transmission. To add fluid, take off the filler plug and add fluid (most likely 4-GL). REMINDER: if you plan to replace the old transmission fluid, make sure you can remove the filler plug before you drain the transmission.
Believe it or not, you add transmission fluid into the same tume that you use to check the transmission fluid. Just a reminder, before you add transmission fluid, make sure you check the level properly. Vehicle must be level, warmed up, and running. Also make sure you put the transmission through all of the gears before checking it.
