For a Nissan Sentra with a manual transmission, the transmission has two plugs . One is a filler plug, which is on its side near the front driver-side tire and clutch cable, and the other is a drain plug, which is at the bottom of the transmission.
To add fluid, take off the filler plug and add fluid (most likely 4-GL).
REMINDER: if you plan to replace the old Transmission Fluid, make sure you can remove the filler plug before you drain the transmission.

The reason a 1992 Nissan Maxima is downshifting so much is the transmission is slipping. This may be due to low transmission fluid levels, or old and worn out transmission fluid. The transmission itself may need to be rebuilt.
Tighten it up!!
