Whe considered on a dry basis (water vapor removed) the atmosphere is made up of nitrogen (78%), oxygen (21%) and argon (1%). These numbers have been rounded somewhat and other elements and gasses in the atmosphere are present at in part per million levels. As an example carbon dioxide is present at 300 ppm (approx) or 0.03%.
