We moved in two years ago and have a soft/silver maple that had not been doing well. The top is very bear and very few new growth. The bark at the trunk is falling off. I had a professional tree service come and look at the tree. He told me that the tree had anthracnose / blight which is a fungus that took over the tree. The tree cannot be saved, it has to be taken down. Also, the root system has reached our pool and if not removed now, then we could have a potential problem. It has already heaved the concrete around the pool. My suggestion would be to have a specialist look at it. Good Luck......
