Good basics of every short story. A clearly defined plot line consisting of the exposition (gives background information); rising action (events in the story that lead to a climax); a climax (some event or events that pull the rising actions together); falling actions (events that result from the climax); and a cohesive resolution, sometimes called the denouement, where the entire story is pulled together to a logical conclusion.
In addition, although it is not necessary to have one, you should have what is called a "hook" at the beginning of your story. This is some mysterious or interesting but not quite fully explained idea that makes a reader want to continue on and find out what happens later.
