Because it is relatively cheap to process into a wide variety of uses. Petroleum is everywhere in our lives. Lubricants, fuel for heating, gasoline, it is used in manufacturing virtually everything. Other Natural Resources don't have a fraction of the extended uses that petroleum products have and it all starts with crude oil.
