several different element are involve......first the tides are controlled by the moon, then the earths tilt and the speed of rotaion on its axis contolls how the oceans waters flow.....therefore the water is always flowing from the mountains into streams into rivers into bays then oceans. because the land is on higher elevation than the water, the ocean contionously splashes against the surface, and then is sucked back in by the flow if streams in the oces (aka known as rip tides) wind or imbalances in water temperature or possibly the moon affecting tides == The winds cause the typical waves that we see on the ocean's surfaces and that result in the crashing surf that we see at beaches. Tsunamis are not like typical waves; they start when earthquakes along the ocean floor displace huge amounts of ocean water, and this displacement radiates outward for thousands of miles. Wind-generated waves affect the surfaces of oceans (the first several meters at most) but tsunamis are entire columns of water, from floor to surface, and contain incredible amounts of energy deriving from the initial earthquakes that cause them.

When aliens move there space ships over the ocean, The movement makes waves. Depending if it is an earlier mode, the waves differ. Hurricanes happen about the same way. Jet engines can also cause the water to boil.

The moon. If something gets pulled by Earth, it pulls back. However, the only thing that the moon can pull is water, so it pulls the water, causing waves.
