Best Answer

The United States is a sovereign one in that its policies and practices are laid within the sole power of the body of the State itself. This applies to most of the nations in the world. As with these, no other governing body can determine a sovereign State's actions. It is recognized as being sovereign by its undisputed power to govern itself.

Is The Vatican a state in the US?

No, it certainly is not. The Vatican is an independent and sovereign state, as are the nations listed as member states in the United Nations*. Sometimes people assume that 'states' are parts of nations, as is the case in the US. But the truth is that France is a sovereign state, Germany is a sovereign state, and Japan is a sovereign state. The US is a federation of separate states, and some don't realize that for a short time early in the history of the US, each state was free to operate as an independent and sovereign state, even engaging in independent international trade and the independent negotiation of international treaties. The trick and the accomplishment of the US was to work out what authority would be reserved to the states and what authority would be given to the federal government of the US._________Note: The last words of Louis XIV of France were "Je m'en vais, mais l'État demeurera toujours." It means "I depart, but the State [of France] will always remain."

Is the largest state in the US soveregin because of its population?

No. Alaska is the largest US state by area, and is not its own sovereign nation. California is the largest state by population, but it too is not its own sovereign nation. However it would be possible FOR California to be its own sovereign nation, because of its massive economy and population (california has the 8th largest economy in the world, about US$1.6 trillion, and the 34th largest population in the world)
