Mostly your conscience tells you what you should do, in two different ways. You really shouldn't tell a lie.
The 10 Commandments, Exodus 20:3-17, tell us that: "Thou shalt not bear false witness" or "You should not lie". Technically, if you are a Christian, God says that even if you tell a "little white lie" that is sin.
