John Alexander Logan, who was a general in the Union army during the US Civil War and was national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (a fraternal organization), declared a holiday named Decoration Day on May 5, 1868. The holiday was first observed on May 30, 1868. It wasn't until 1967 that Decoration Day was officially renamed as Memorial Day even though that was what most everybody had called the holiday since the early 20th century.
