One doesn't necessarily have to give away any possessions when they "become" a Buddhist. Buddhism teaches impermanence of all things and non-attachment, so in this way it is better to give up our emotional attachment to material objects. Answer: It isn't so much that you are compelled to give things away, but you walk away from them as you see how empty there possessions become.
