GPS (and its equivalents) is a system, not a product. It means Global Positioning System, and consists of a constellation of 20-odd satellites (plus a few spares) and some ground stations to control them. GPS is the US originated system (and the original), and there are several others from different nations. These systems are based upon the ability to find a location by comparing radio waves from several different sources, and of having an exact knowledge of where these sources are. Your hand (or car) device is a complex computer that listens for the signals of several of these satellites, and from this data computing your location. You need at least four good quality signals to compute a location. Forest cover, canyons (including city streets), and other variables will degrade the signal. But you will still be given a number which may thus have a degree of uncertainty associated with it, but seldom is this qualification offered. Higher quality outdoor devices will indicate whether the satellites are at suitable azimuths, and of course, those used by surveyors have quite superior properties.

Assisted GPS, generally abbreviated as A-GPS, is a system which can improve the startup performance of a GPS satellite-based positioning system. It is used extensively with GPS-capable cellular phones as its development was accelerated by the U.S. FCC's 911 mandate making the location of a cell phone available to emergency call dispatchers.
A Pioneer GPS is used for cars. The GPS is designed to be installed in the dashboard. Some features of this GPS include, multimedia playback, GPS tracking and radio.

GPS technology can be used in map making by accurately collecting geographic data such as coordinates and elevation points. This data can then be integrated into mapping software to create detailed and precise maps of specific areas. GPS also allows for real-time mapping and updates, making it a valuable tool for cartographers and geographers.
