When was the last time Mount Vesuvius erupted?

The last major eruption was in March of 1944 and it destroyed the villages of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, Massa di Somma, Ottaviano, and part of San Giorgio a Cremano. From 6 January to 23 February 1944, lava flows appeared within the rim and there were outflows. The activity paused on 23 February and resumed on 13 March. Small explosions then occurred until the major explosion took place on 18 March 1944.The eruption could be seen from Naples and several photos have been taken. Several other USAAF groups were based near the volcano so different perspectives of the eruption and the damage caused to the local villages were recorded by USAAF photographers and personnel. The volcano has been quiescent since then. Over the past few centuries, the quiet stages have varied from 18 months to 7½ years, making the current lull in activity the longest in nearly 500 years. While Vesuvius is not thought likely to erupt in the immediate future, the danger posed by future eruptions is seen as very high in light of the volcano's tendency towards sudden, extremely violent explosions, and the very dense human population on and around the mountain. Historical note: Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and the death of 10,000 to 25,000 people. It has erupted many times since and is today regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the population of 3,000,000 people living nearby and its tendency towards explosive (Plinian) eruptions. It is the most densely populated volcanic region in the world.1944

Is mt Vesuvius expected to erupt in the future?

No one knows exactly when a volcano will erupt however some early warning signs that can start weeks if not months in advance include increased frequency of earthquakes along with releases of ash.

What benefits does mount Vesuvius serve to Italy?

Although the eruption did indeed cause the destruction of numerous buildings, cities, plants, animals, and people, it also benefited the environment, surrounding land, and human life. First of all, past eruptions deposited ash that enriched the soil to be fertile and rich in nutrients, therefore many people continue to farm the nearby land. Secondly, the volcanic covering of Pompeii and Herculaneum provided future historians with an amazing opportunity: The ash preserved and protected a vibrant city against the elements until future archaeologists unearthed it. In addition, the volcanic eruption was the first to be described on detail.

Why did the volcano outside of Pompeii erupt?

Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. because this is what active volcanoes do. They continually smoulder and produce eruptions every few thousand years. Scientific research has shown that Mt Vesuvius was formed 25,000 years ago and was built up by a series of small lava flows and by some eruptions. Around 19,000 years ago, there was the beginning of large explosive eruptions (eruptions which involve explosions which throw volcanic ash in the air). A large explosive eruption which occurred 18,000 years ago created the mountain's current caldera (the cauldron-like feature at the top). This was followed by a series of non-explosive, but lava-producing eruptions. There was a large explosive eruption 11,000 years ago and three small explosive eruption 8,000 and 5,000 years ago and 3,800 years ago there was a large one. The explosion which buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 A.D. was the last large explosive eruption of Mt Vesuvius. There will be further explosive eruptions in the distant future.
