The intersection of Merchants Road Lower and The Long Walk, at the south corner

of the Galway City Museum, is located at

53.2695° north latitude

9.0535° west longitude.

The meridian of longitude that passes through that point is the meridian of 9.0535° West.

There is not some finite set of meridians that everyone must use and no others.

A meridian can be defined at any longitude.

We're troubled by the number of people who think that there are a certain official

batch of meridians, and that we can only pick longitudes from those.

Would you ask a person: "What mark on the ruler is closest to your height ?" We don't

think so. We think you'd ask him: "How tall are you ?" In the same way, if you want to

know the longitude of a place, then the question is: "What's the longitude of that place ?"

The fountain in The Eyre Square, near the intersection of Williamsgate St and Victoria Pl

in Galway, Republic of Ireland, is located at

53.27470° north latitude

9.04942° west longitude.

Other places in town have different coordinates.
