Most common are different steels and aluminum alloys, although there are some titanium bikes as well. Bikes labeled as Magnesium, Scandium or whatnot should more fittingly be called Aluminium alloys as well, but listing one of the rarer fractions in the alloy makes for a better selling point.
Bicycles and motorcycles can be made of several different metals, with various steel and aluminum alloys as the main components. Bicycles can also be made out of titanium. Usually different metals is used for different parts of the bike.

Most bicycles are steel, but aluminum bicycles are also popular. There are some titanium bicycles, but an inexpensive titanium frame is over a thousand dollars. And there are carbon fiber bikes too.
Different metals are used for different bicycle frames.

The cheapest metal used is would be a high tensile carbon steel. Better steel bicycles are made of chromoly steel, which is an alloy of steel with chromium and molybdenum. This alloy makes the steel stronger and harder than cheaper steels.

Steel frames can also have "butted" tubes. Butting means that the steel tubing is thicker at the ends than it is in the middle. This makes the tubing liter in the middle where it does not need to be as strong.

Aluminum comes after steel when it comes to cost. Aluminum has a lower density and strength than steel, but a higher strength to weight ratio. This means thicker, larger tubes of aluminum can be used to make the frame stronger, while steel maintaining a weight that's typically lighter than a steel frame. Unfortunately, there are some cheap aluminum frames on the market today that use aluminum that is so thick, the frame is actually heavier than a quality chromoly frame.

Titanium is also used for bicycle frames. Titanium is desired because it has the characteristics of a steel frame, but with a strength to weight ratio even better than aluminum. Because titanium can be difficult to machine, titanium frames will cost significantly more. Initially, the titanium itself was very expensive, but with the fall of the Iron Curtain, titanium became more available.

Magnesium is sometimes used for bicycle frames, though it is very rare. Magnesium is lighter still, and cheaper than titanium, but more difficult to work with in terms of preventing corrosion.

Sometimes, metals are combined to make a frame. For example: A steel rear triangle, which allows for smaller diameter tubing thus better clearances, and an aluminum front triangle for lighter weight. This practice was originally accomplished in the bike industry by using the same thermal compound used on air and space craft to bond dissimilar metals. Full suspension frames can use different materials for the front and rear triangle because the triangles aren't welded together. The rear triangle has to pivot, so it's held in place with a system of bushings and bolts.
Bicycle Frames are made from a number of metals and carbon composites. some materials as follows: 1. Steel Frame Bicycles Strong, Stiff and comfortable, Alluminium Frames Light, Stiff and comfortable, Titaninium Bike Frames strong very light and comfortable, carbon framesets ultra light, stiff and comfortable.

Bicycle frames are made from a number of different types of metal alloys. The material used and the frame style of the bike are dependent of the need for weight and speed.

Why were the first bicycles made out of wood?

When bicycles were invented wood was the only material which could be use to built such a vehicle. At the beginning bicycles were very simple without much of the mechanisms that we can find in today`s bicycles so they could be made from wood from top to bottom.
