So Bismarck did everything in his power to suppress the Catholic Church in Germany, particularly in Prussia including arresting and imprisoning bishops and priests and thousands of laypeople who attempted to aid them. He closed Catholic schools, and put many restrictions on Catholics. He also abolished religious Orders, made civil marriage mandatory, and in general made life miserable if you were Catholic. Religious exemptions and protections in the Constitution were removed.
