Genghis Khan used a variety of methods. His army almost completely consisted of the mounted archers of the Steppes. Because each man had at least one extra horse (the average was five) and their main foods were horse milk and horse blood the army could move with incredible rapidity. No other army in the world could match the Mongols speed of movement and manoeuvre. The mongols used their speed to outmanoeuvre and keep constant stress on their enemies armies until they broke, at which point they would be destroyed. The mongols also liked to try to outsmart the enemy; they laid ambushes and would lure them into chasing after them in false retreats while shooting and then turn and destroy them. Anything else that they needed to eat would be foraged or plundered. In addition to that, the mongols used an early form of psychological warfare. They completely destroyed the land they crossed through, and if a city resisted them then when it was captured ALL its inhabitants were killed and the city was burnt to the ground. As stories of Horror swept before them, more and more cities surrendered without any opposition to spare themselves the punishment. The mongols kept everyone petrified, and it greatly reduced the opposition to their invasions. If a city did resist them, they liked to use a primitive form of biological warfare, using catapults and trebuchets to fling dead animals and humans into the cities to spread diseases. In accordance with the mongol way of war, centred on speed and flexibility, the cities must fall quickly. They would try to lure the defenders out where they could be destroyed. Woe betide a city that did not surrender to the Mongols quickly: it would usually be completely destroyed. The Mongols liked to take the offensive always, and they liked to manipulate the enemy just as much as they liked destroying them. A glance through some old stories from the time shows just how scared of the mongols everyone was. Simple, Strong, Fast, Flexible, Horrifying, Determined, Cunning, Light, the mongols were all of these and more, much more.
