Nvidia and AMD use different systems to link 2 or more GPUs together.

Nvidia use SLI and AMD use CrossFire, they both do essentially the same thing. But not all motherboards support both SLI and CrossFire, some just support one of them, and not all motherboards support SLI or CrossFire with more than 2 GPUs.
