I also own a 2000 Nissan Xterra; and I've come accross the same problem......I solved this problem by removing the heat shield from the engine header. It was becoming rusty and loose. Hope this helps.

I am not likely to buy a Nissan pickup. I prefer Toyota brand because they are a more reliable brand. Plus, I prefer a car to a truck.
Suspension components do wear out eventually, but mostly it's a gradual thing. It's not like they're perfect at 49 900 and busted at 50 000. Still, 50 000 is a fair distance and having the shocks replaced at that time is very likely to improve the handling of the car.
