It could result in a genetic disorder involving the hemoglobin molecule, in which it would have the wrong sequence of amino acids, and therefore the wrong shape, making it function improperly or not at all. Sickle cell anemia and thalassemia are two genetic disorders involving mutated hemoglobin.
