Chiang Kai-shek came to power in China as the leader of the Nationalist Party, also known as the Kuomintang (KMT), following the death of Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of modern China. Chiang rose through the ranks of the military and emerged as the successor to Sun Yat-sen. He consolidated his power by leading military campaigns against rival warlords and eventually becoming the head of the Nationalist government in 1928.
