Well, sometimes quality is worth the price. Therefore, I would not recommend purchasing a Refurbished Laptop. However, I would recommend purchasing a brand new laptop instead.
I would recommend using a tablet rather than a laptop if you are using it to jot down things at the restaurants and take pictures. It will be much less conspicuous while you are at the dining table.

Is there a router that you can plug a laptop modem into so that I can get internet on my desktop also. The desktop would need ethernet and of course the laptop is usb. So is there a router out there that can do this?

The IP address is relevant to the internet connection. Only if you were using a broadband internet card, would that aid in finding a stolen laptop. Perhaps locating the serial number would be your best bet.
I have both and I would say that the laptop would be better. You can hold more memory on it than the iPod. You can also see videos or pictures bigger on it. I hope this helped!!
