On June 30, 1520 they showed their true colors: fearing an attack by the Aztecs, Pedro de Alvarado ordered a preemptive slaughter of noblemen and priests on the city's main temple (known as The Massacre at the Main Temple), starting what would eventually become the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire.
