Open the cylinder and look at the frame that is usually hidden by the crane. The serial number is stamped on the frame.

When you release the cylinder from the frame,you should find the serial number at the base of the frame and on the crane at the swivel.
When you open the cylinder you will see the serial number on the crane or frame at the swivel.
When you open the crane you should see the serial number in two places. On the frame at the swivel and on the crane under the cylinder across from each other.
When you open up the cylinder, the serial number would be on the crane by the swivel and on the cylinder frame across from that serial number also.
On a Colt revolver, the serial number is generally in two places. When you open the cylinder you will find the serial number at the base of the frame & crane.

The serial number on my Colt's King Cobra is right where it is on many double action Colts. Open the cylinder and look at the frame just above the crane and below the cut-out for the ejector rod. There it is. On my King Cobra, the serial number is also marked on the crane itself, juxtaposed from the one on the frame.
The serial # can be found inside on the frame and the crane when you open up the cylinder. The two numbers should be the same.
When you swing out the cylinder, the same serial number should be in two places. On the crane at the pivot and on the frame across from the pivot.
The crane is the part that supports the cylinder and attaches the cylinder to the frame.
