Highway 101 runs along parts of the El Camino Real.
The answer is Highway 101.
The El Camino is very real and is still in use. Today the California highway system follows the original route and has placed mission bells all along the route to let people know they are on the El Camino. The route was the one used between the 21 missions system in California. All the missions were a days ride from each other.

Somewhere Along the Highway was created on 2006-04-24.
El Camino Real originally was the Spanish king's first highway. It would have been built along the coast as that was the safest route, rather than inland, at early colonial times. Another reason would have been that it was easier to build along the relatively flatter coast than rocky, vegetated inland areas. See related links for more Spanish history.
There are no original Route 66 signs still posted along that stretch of highway. The last original Route 66 road sign was taken down in Chicago on January 17, 1977.
Fences along highways are often used to prevent animals from crossing onto the road, reducing the risk of accidents. They can also help to control vegetation growth along the highway and provide a barrier for safety and security purposes.
The main highway that runs along the California coast is California State Route 1, and the highway that runs along the East coast is U.S. Route 1.
