Uhmm, eat?

Another Answer

Anorexia Nervosa is not about food: it is about power. When the person suffering with the disease realizes that the disease has power over him or her, committed, medical attention is required.

Generally, in confinement, patients are required to gain up to half a pound a day, or forgo privileges, such as television. A prolonged confinement may be required in order to work through the physical and emotional issues involved with professional help and guidance.

Most importantly, the family and support system must recognize that the disease cannot have power over them, too. They must make it clear to the 'patient' that a refusal to eat or to participate in mealtimes is powerless over the group.

Therapy for anorexia can vary greatly based on the needs of the patient. It can be out-patient - which is the most common - or in-patient. Therapy is used as a tool to overcome the serious mental effects of the disorder, and often to work towards a better, healthier mental state. Dietary supplements and supervision are frequently used. In more severe cases, in-patient anorexics may have a feeding tube or IV (or both) inserted.
