its used in molecular geometry. it refers to molecules with the shape including one atom at the center of 3 surrounding atoms attached at approximately 120 degree angles. Planar simply means that there are three, connected carbon centers that are each trigonal planar. for a good example look up the shape of propane. its defined as having trigonal planar structure, but i don't really know why that is being as the middle carbon atom only has 2 attached atoms... but yea that's it.

I would think tetrahedral. But I am rusty, so it could be trigonal pyramidal.

What is nitrate ion molecular shape?

The nitrate ion (NO3-) has a trigonal planar molecular shape, with a symmetrical arrangement of the three oxygen atoms around the central nitrogen atom. This shape is due to the three electron pairs surrounding the nitrogen atom repelling each other to maximize the distance between them.

What is the shape of amide ion?

The amide ion has a trigonal planar shape, with a nitrogen atom at the center surrounded by three atoms in the same plane.

What is the bond angle between the oxygen atoms in the carbon dioxide molecule?

The bond angle between the oxygen atoms in a carbon dioxide molecule is 180 degrees. This is because the molecule has a linear geometry, with the carbon atom in the center bonded to each oxygen atom on opposite sides, creating a straight line.

Is co3 -2 polar or nonpolar?

(CO3)-2 forms a symmetrical planar molecule, so that means it's non-polar.

PH3 forms a trigonal pyramid ClO4- forms a perfectly regular trigonal pyramid, known as a tetrahedron BeCl2 ~APEX

What shape do you expect for NO2 - ion?

The NO2^- ion is expected to have a bent shape due to its trigonal planar molecular geometry with a lone pair on the nitrogen atom, which causes repulsion that distorts the bond angles. This results in a bent molecular shape with a bond angle of approximately 134 degrees.

Which best describe the molecular geometry of nitrate ion?

It is a trigonal planar structure - the nitrogen atom in the center.
