its used in molecular geometry. it refers to molecules with the shape including one atom at the center of 3 surrounding atoms attached at approximately 120 degree angles. Planar simply means that there are three, connected carbon centers that are each trigonal planar. for a good example look up the shape of propane. its defined as having trigonal planar structure, but i don't really know why that is being as the middle carbon atom only has 2 attached atoms... but yea that's it.

What is molecular geometry of CH2?

It will be trigonal planar in terms of electron domain geometry, and bent in terms of molecular geometry. Carbon will form a single bond with each hydrogen atom, and will have 2 electrons left over. A molecule with 2 bonding domains, and one non-bonding domain takes on a bent shape.

What is the molecular geometry of NH3 molecule?

At first glance, you may assume the NH2- ion takes the form of a tetrahedral shape similar to CH4 or ammonia; however, there are two lone electron pairs. Therefore, like the shape of water (H2O), the shape can be called angular or V-shaped.

Is a carbonate ion polar?

The carbonate ion, or CO3 2- has 24 electrons and its structure is trigonal planar. It is non-polar because the trigonal planar is symmetrical.
