Money in London in the 1880's (and indeed in all of the UK until 1968) was on the £sd system. "£sd" is short for Pounds-Shillings-Pence, and refers to the fact that there were 20 Shillings to the Pound and 12 Pennies (or Pence) to the Shilling. Substantially all coins circulating at that time would have a portrait of Queen Victoria (who had been on the throne for some 50 years at that point), although coins with King George III (who reigned for 60 years between 1760 and 1820), King George IV (1820-1830) and King William IV (1830-1837) might still be seen occasionally

Coins produced during that decade include:

COPPER:

Farthing (1/4 Penny)

Half Penny

Penny

SILVER:

Three Pence

Six Pence

Shilling

Florin (Two Shillings)

Half Crown (2 1/2 Shillings)

Double Florin

Crown (5 Shillings, or 1/4 Pound)

GOLD:

Half Sovereign (Half Pound)

Sovereign (1 Pound)

Two Pounds

Five Pounds

The Double Florin was only produced from 1887-1890, and the Two Pound and Five Pound coins were not struck in quantity. Other coins were produced, particularly" Maunday Money" (silver 1,2 3 and 4 pence coins distributed by the Queen around Easter), but were not really intended to circulate. The Groat (4 Pence) was struck in quantity as recently as 1854, so some might still circulate in the 1880's. The Half-Groat (2 Pence) was struck in quantity only in 1837 and 1842, and so probably wouldn't be much seen by the 1880's.

The Bank of England issued bank notes in denominations of £5, £10, £20, £50, £100, £200, £300, £500 and £1000 during the reign of Queen Victoria. Notes issued by private banks might also have circulated at that time,
