Another reply: You don't get a certain amount of experience for killing a monster. Rather, you get a little experience every time you cause damage to a monster. In the case of magic attacks, you also get a certain amount of magic experience every time you cast a certain spell - and then you get experience separately, for the damage inflicted.

Therefore, I would suggest you simply attack monsters that are appropriate for your level. Don't attack monsters at too high a level, because that will cost you too much food. Don't attack monsters that are too low, because (1) if their level is less than half your level, they are not aggresive - thus, you will lose some time, and (2) you also waste some time when the monster is almost dead.
