since Americans lacked indoor plumbing, central heating and electricity they bathed and washed their hair more than they were suppose to. the result was scalp disease. but she came up with a way to stop that and so she made the shampoo and hair ointment that contained sulfur to make the scalp healthier for hair growth

Madam C. J. Walker (1867-1919) was an entrepreneur who used a good portion of her wealth as a philanthropist and political activist. She was especially well-known for her $1,000 contribution to a YMCA in Indianapolis's black community in 1912, for her $5,000 contribution to the NAACP's anti-lynching fund in 1919 and for her gifts to many black colleges, schools, churches and civic organizations. She spoke out on behalf of black soldiers during World War I and provided employment in her hair care products manufacturing company for thousands of African American women who otherwise would have been consigned to farm labor and household domestic jobs.
