AnswerA wide range of scholars, including historians, archaeologists and biblical scholars, say there was never a census under King Herod. Based on objective evidence, it is therefore not possible to estimate any month for the biblical census to have taken place. Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says of Luke's census, "The best explanation is that, although Luke likes to set his Christian drama in the context of well-known events from antiquity, sometimes he does so inaccurately."

Since reference to the census occurs only in Luke's Gospel, any estimate can only be made on the basis of Luke's narrative. He says that Mary and Joseph travelled to Bethlehem for the census. Since Mary was heavily pregnant, the young couple would have left as late as possible and returned as soon as possible. So, the census should have occurred about the same time as Jesus was born, although Luke curiously never mentions it again after using the census as a reason for the journey. We can tell that Luke saw the birth occurring in the warmer months, because he provides a story about shpeherds watching their flocks in open fields. So Luke must have intended the census to be seen as occurring around the April to September period.

What was the most powerful position during the roman republic?

It was the censor. Originally his term of office was for a whole lustrum; that is ,five years. Ten years after the office was instituted, its term was reduced to eighteen months . The term of office of all other magistrates (officers of state) was annual. The lustrum was a ceremony of purification of the soldiers after they had been registered at the census. Since the census took place every five years, lustrum also meant the five year period between censuses.

Why did Herman hollerith invented the tabulating machine?

To count data in the 1890 census, which could not have been completed on time to meet the requirements of the constitution using traditional hand methods. The tabulator also controlled a sorter so that cards could be separated for appropriate further processing later on other tabulators.

Why did Augustus order a census of the Roman Empire?

Augustus, or any other emperor, would require a census for several reasons. A head count and an estimation of the wealth of the people would give an idea of the amount of taxes that could be collected. The military was also involved in that the census would determine how many, if any, new troops were required in a territory for defense or policing. Army recruitment was also involved, as a province with a large number of able bodied males would have a larger share to contribute to the army.

Why did the us gov use a punch card in 1890?

The 1880 census had taken 7 years to complete and the 1890 census was estimated to take 13 years to complete. This was unacceptable, as a census must be done every 10 years as required by the constitution. A means of automating data analysis was needed to reduce the time to complete the census. The punchcard and a card reader connected to a tabulator/counter and a sorter provided this automation. Punchcards could be punched with the data from census forms. A tabulator/counter could count 40 values from the card simultaneously while one lid on the sorter popped up to tell the operator where to put it. Punchcards from the various sorter bins were sent to other tabulator/counter & sorter machines for further processing. Using this new system the basic census results required by the constitution were completed in months instead of years.

Which is correct - 'estimated as' or 'estimated to be'?

'Estimated to be' is more commonly used. In a different situation you could use 'estimated as', it is not entirely grammatically incorrect. For example, "that ski jump is estimated as the highest recorded ski jump in history."

Is there a recognized abbreviation suffix or prefix for census as in 1841 census?

US censuses are done every ten years (1840, 1850, etc). I doubt you will find a census for 1841. To find abbreviations, suffixes, prefixes or other symbols used in the census forms, use Google to find census forms for the years you want (1840 census form, etc). Or you could Google "free census forms" and find websites where you can download blank census forms free of charge,
