Tecumseh. A man from the Shawnee Tribe.
Tecumseh was a Shawnee Indian chief, who fought against US expansion into the Midwest. He was known for his opposition to any surrender of Native American land to whites. He preached against native American adoption of white customs. He fought on the British side in the War of 1812, and was killed in 1813.
Tecumseh was a Shawnee chief in the early 1800s. When the Louisiana Territory was bought from France in 1803 the white settlers moved westward and were settling on Native American land. Tecumseh wanted all Natives to unite and fight off the white settlers.
The source of Tecumseh's ideas about Indian unity came as a result of his observations in the Ohio Valley. Indians had grown very dependent on Anglo-American goods such as guns and clothing. He was also upset when he observed how American settlers encroached on native lands on a regular basis. He called for a return to traditional Indian ways. He took his ideas to the individual Native American nations, and soon developed what came to be known as Tecumseh's Indian Confederacy.
