Pedro Alvares Cabral and I imagine the rest of the sea explorers had no idea how big of a continent the americas were. You know the Colombus thought he'd found India when he reached the americas.
Cabral, it is widely accepted was not the discoverer of Brazil, as the portuguese had known that this territory existed by accident while trapped in a corrent and let some ships to those shores. Cabral returned to Brazil about 2 years later to check it out, and it turned out to be a gold mine. But the portuguese sights were on reaching India by sea to get a hold of all those spices and silks. That was a pretty great accident, right?

Being a European country, you cant say Portugal was discovered by explorers in the conventional sense. Ofcourse the human species didnt evolve around it, but the explorers is a concept that tracks to the XVIth century, by which time Portugal had been well established. The Romans for instance conquered that territory, but you cant say they discovered it. It did however send explorers to Asia, Africa, Oceania and the American continent.
Most of them lived in eithe Portugal or Spain and some in England. There were also Dutch and Italian explorers.
