Since both Superpowers (USSR and USA) had a nuclear weapon, they knew that if one will attack the other, both atomic bombs would have been fired and they would have destroyed the world. Therefore, they fought in Arm race, Space race and Proxy wars (wars fought by smaller countries on the behalf of the superpowers). Also, in the Cold war there were no actual fighting between the USSR and the USA. Hope it helped :)
