I think you're referring to The Wizard of Oz. I believe Judy Garland wore wigs to create an accurate depiction of the character Dorothy. They probably changed length of the wigs halfway through the making of the film and that would be why her hair mysteriously changes length all the time.

She was trying to sleep and could not, so woke up in the middle of the night to take a few more. Her little body just could not take anymore, and gave out. She was found in the bathroom by her then 5th husband, Mickey Deans.
